Size and exergy assessment of solid oxide fuel cell-based H2-fed power generation system with alternative electrolytes: A comparative study

This work aims to analyse and compare the thermodynamic performance size of two types solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-based plants. The former is conventional H2-fed plant based on SOFC with an oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte (SOFC-O), latter using a proton-conducting (SOFC-H). Thermodynamic analysis reveals that in SOFC-H system, due H2O formation at cathode side, not only anode concentration losses decreases, but also partial pressure difference between H2 increases which leads increase Nernst voltage compared SOFC-O system. Due this, plants exhibit different terms voltage, power, efficiency, stack outlet temperature heat exchangers used for preheating air. results indicate, current densities less than around 3,000 A/m2, energy exergy efficiencies SOFC-H-based system are more those SOFC-O-based plant. reduced area per unit power as In addition, sensitivity demonstrates thin cells favourable
